Statement of Archbishop Gustavo regarding shooting in Buffalo

Regarding the senseless and tragic murder of 10 individuals and the wounding of three others in a Buffalo supermarket the afternoon of May 14, we profoundly regret the loss of life and pray for all concerned. We remain steadfastly opposed to all forms of racism.

In their most recent pastoral letter against racism, “Open Wide Our Hearts,” the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops write: “We unequivocally state that racism is a life issue. Accordingly, we will not cease to speak forcefully against and work toward ending racism. Racism directly places brother and sister against each other, violating the dignity inherent in each person.”

Our faith declares that all are loved by our Creator God and therefore simultaneously we are sisters and brothers to be treasured from conception onward. Conversion of heart to this value is essential.

Weapons in the hands of those who hate is a formula for disaster.

Pray for the family members of these brothers and sisters needlessly gunned down while shopping for groceries on the weekend. May God comfort and console them with an outpouring of love as they try to comprehend the incomprehensible.
