ASL YOUTH CATECHISM (YOUCAT)

Introduction to ASL YOUCAT

A recent statistic showed that 99% of deaf people in the United States are not affiliated with any church or religious congregation at all. Often liturgies and catechetical programs do not have the resources available to provide qualified interpreters for the deaf community. However, even as more interpreters are made available to interpret liturgies, the deaf community still hungers for catechesis outside the Mass in order to explain what the Church teaches to others in the deaf community. As a start to ASL catechesis, a national project was developed to translate the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church (YOUCAT) into ASL.
