āSeeing the potential for a better tomorrow
Children are our most precious resource because in them lies our future. We see the potential for a better tomorrow in their smiling faces and small hands. Catholic Charities is blessed to have a multitude of wonderful parenting and pregnancy programs and dedicated staff who run them. These programs include: Precious Minds, New Connections; Parent Talk ā East Side Promise Neighborhood; Building Strong Families; Great Start Plus; Parents as Teachers and Nurse Family Partnership as well as the Guadalupe Home and San Antonio Birth Doulas. San Antonio Birth Doulas (SABD) is a program which provides new and expecting parents with support in the areas of pregnancy, labor, breastfeeding, newborn care and bonding in an effort to prevent infant/child abuse and neglect. The Guadalupe Home is a transitional living program for homeless expectant mothers and homeless mothers with infants; the mothers have a safe place to prepare for birth as well as a home-like environment in which to nurture their baby.

Recently we celebrated Independence Day ā a time to remember the Declaration of Independence and our freedom as a country. We should also use this day and every day to remember our military members and the sacrifices they and their families make so America can continue to be the āland of the free.ā The armed forces have always had a strong presence in San Antonio, so much so, we have earned the nickname of āMilitary City, USA.ā In fact, many of us work with, live by, are friends with or are related to a current or former military member ā some of you are one yourself. With this strong, consistent military presence in our city, it is imperative we care for those brave men and women and their families as they handle all of the challenges resulting from protecting our freedom and also when they move into civilian life.

With schools dismissing for summer break and we begin to consider summer vacation, I would like to introduce you to one of our important programs for school-aged children. Catholic Charitiesā After School and Summer Youth Program provides parents with a safe place to send their children after school and during the summer. We are proud and blessed to provide participating children with transportation from school, hot and healthy meals, homework/tutoring assistance, outdoor recreation, physical fitness, arts and crafts, community gardening and nutrition skills, positive peer and adult relationships at absolutely no cost to the family. We are the only program of this kind to offer so many complementary services and I believe this is what makes this program both unique and crucial to our community.
