Values Tested by Border Crisis.
Editiorial from Archbishop Gustavo as published in the August 18th issue of San Antonio Express-News

SAN ANTONIO — We have an international humanitarian crisis in our country, and this impacts the state of Texas, especially the border region, in powerful ways. Recently, I read an op-ed in this newspaper intimating that, because the continued surge of undocumented immigrants on our Southwest border from Mexico and Central America affects communities across our nation, in a sense every American lives on the border today. For reasons, different from the writer's intention, I agree. As a nation, we all are affected by the plight of these children.

While my personal interest embraces the welfare of all undocumented immigrants in our country, I have a special human and pastoral concern about the women and children who are recent arrivals, especially unaccompanied children immigrants. Most have fled their homelands because they suffered or faced serious harms, including death, from violence by local gangs and international drug cartels and from domestic abuse.

Pray for Peace in Iraq

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This past weekend Catholics across the nation  joined their voices in prayer for peace in Iraq. Christians and other vulnerable populations in Iraq as tjeu face the destruction, burning and looting of churches, homes and businesses being threatened by the Islamic State (ISIS).

We must continue to pray for peace in this troubled part of the world, and let your elected representatives know of your concern that humanitarian assistance reach Christians and other religious minorities who are suffering in Iraq, Syria, and other countries. Below see the prayer for peace written by Patriarch Louis Sako of Baghdad.

Sincerely in Christ,
Archbishop Gustavo
