My dear sisters and brothers in Christ; today, as we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, we witness a profound connection between Mary’s singular grace and the first religious profession of Basma and Elena. Just as Mary’s Immaculate Conception was the first light of the New Covenant, today marks a unique first light of your lifelong “yes” to God, illuminating the path on which you are embarking.

In the Gospel, we see Mary as the perfect model of surrender to God’s will. Her response to the angel, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38), is a declaration of trust, love, and total self-gift. Basma and Elena, your commitment today reflects this same surrender.

Like Mary, you say yes to a call that goes beyond understanding – a call to participate in the redemptive mission of Christ through prayer, service, and witness.

The readings remind us of the transformative power of God’s grace. In Genesis, the darkness of human sin is met with a promise: a woman will bring forth the one who crushes the serpent’s head. This promise is fulfilled in Mary, and it is renewed in every vocation consecrated to God. St. Paul tells us, in the second reading, that we are chosen in Christ to be holy and blameless before Him. Today, through your profession, you step into this mystery of holiness, aligning your life with God’s eternal design.

Mary’s Immaculate Conception shows us that God’s grace is stronger than sin, and that His plans for us are always good. You, Basma and Elena, are called to radiate this truth in a world often overshadowed by despair.

Through your own covenant, you become witnesses to the hope that God’s love brings.

As you make your profession, remember that Mary’s life was not without trials, but her faith sustained her. Like her, you will face challenges, but trust in God’s providence and grace. Your yes today is not the end but the beginning of a journey filled with both joy and sacrifice.

Pope Francis has said: “The uncontaminated beauty of our Mother is incomparable, but at the same time it attracts us. Let us entrust ourselves to her…” May the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception, guide you always. Through her intercession, may your lives shine as beacons of God’s love and faithfulness.
