Deacon Mauro Gonzalez

Location: St. Joseph Catholic Church

My dear brothers and sisters; today we gather to bid farewell to Deacon Mauro Gonzalez, a beloved servant of God and the Church, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. As we grieve his passing, we also celebrate a life lived in faith, hope, and love. The readings chosen for today remind us of the eternal hope we have in Christ and the promise of life everlasting.

The Book of Wisdom assures us that “the souls of the just are in the hand of God.” Mauro’s life of faith reflects this truth. He lived as one tested and proven, like gold in a furnace, Full of hope and motivated by the love he sowed in all of us, we pray for Mauro to be now in the peace of God’s presence. Though his physical absence leaves an ache in our hearts, we take comfort in hoping that God has taken him to Himself as a sacrificial offering, blessed and cherished.

In the psalm we hear the words, “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” Mauro walked with the Good Shepherd throughout his life, trusting in God’s guidance even in the dark valleys. His devotion to his family and his ministry at St. Joseph’s South San are clear testimonies of his commitment to God’s call. Whether comforting others through his music, serving with humility, or teaching by example, Deacon Mauro embodied the love and care of the Shepherd who never abandons His flock.

Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians speaks of an eternal dwelling prepared for us in heaven. Mauro embraced this truth with hope and courage, dedicating his life to the service of Christ. As a deacon, he proclaimed the Gospel not only in words but through the witness of his life. He walked by faith, always aspiring to please the Lord.

Today, we commend him to that eternal dwelling, trusting in God’s promise that, though his earthly tent has been destroyed, Mauro may now enjoy the eternal home prepared for him.

In the Gospel, Jesus promises us, “In my Father’s house, there are many dwelling places.” Mauro’s life was a testament to this hope. As we hope he reunites with his beloved wife, Chuyita – whom we also remember dearly at the Pastoral Ministry Center – and all those who have gone before him, we are reminded that for those who share the faith of the Church death is not the end but the doorway to eternal life with Christ.

Let us honor Mauro’s memory by imitating his faith, love, and service. May our sorrow be lightened by the joy of our hope in the Resurrection, and may Our Lady of Guadalupe, whom Mauro loved, guide him into the arms of the Father. Rest in peace Deacon Mauro, good and faithful servant.
