Proclamation of the Pastoral Vision of the Archdiocese of San Antonio
To all of Christ’s faithful people, the priests, deacons, consecrated women and men religious, and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of San Antonio:
ON THE 18TH DAY OF MAY, 2013, as we gathered at San Fernando Cathedral to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, I proclaimed in your presence, a Pastoral Vision for the Archdiocese of San Antonio:
- ENCOUNTERING CHRIST
- UNITED AS CHURCH
- SENT BY THE SPIRIT
This vision celebrates who we are and places before us the question put to Peter in Jerusalem on the first Pentecost, “What must we do?” (Acts 2:37) As we are called into discipleship through the encounter with Christ, we cannot be passive. Illumined by the guiding principles and spirit of the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, we recognize that our following of the Lord calls us to build a welcoming Culture of Encounter as disciples and missionaries as well as, recently summoned by the invitation of Pope Francis to live as a Synodal Church:
Seeking to live in sacramental communion with one another, the Archdiocese of San Antonio exists to make disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ to prepare for the promise of Eternal Life.
Living deeply our core values of:
Prayerfulness
We conform our lives to Christ through faithful meditation on God’s will and loving presence as we fulfill the responsibilities of discipleship.
Stewardship
Always grateful for the resources entrusted to us, we use them wisely, being transparent and responsible to God and one another.
Unity
Grounded in the Eucharist, we embrace diversity among persons, cultures and apostolates, and foster the bonds of charity that reflect the Trinitarian relationship of God, creating a culture of encounter that leads to communion.
WE CONTINUE TO BE LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT to whom we each consecrated ourselves and together consecrated our Archdiocese of San Antonio. We continue to experience great pastoral growth. As I consider our shared progress, I am grateful for you and proud of you. Together, we are energized by the spirit of the V Encuentro and the zeal for modeling a Listening Church, the Holy Spirit has provided confirmation for this course, sending us to share the fruits that have been bestowed upon us. You have also encouraged me to continue focusing on our priorities already proclaimed:

Through our shared encounters with Christ, proclaiming the Good News with joy, zeal, and renewed spirit!
Catechesis and Formation
Growing in faith and in knowledge of Jesus Christ through our shared encounter!
Youth and Young Adults
As Missionary Disciples, strengthened by our shared encounters with Jesus Christ!
I also heard you express the individual concerns and dreams of your parishes, schools, and families. You desired to see this vision come to life in particular ways in your own parishes. I believe that our unity in vision and purpose will be expressed most effectively and most energetically in the context of each parish’s particular character and needs.
ON THIS SOLEMNITY OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD, I invite each parish to embrace this call of becoming a Synodal Church and continue working on your previously identified parish goals. When they are met, I encourage you to discern new ones that are also in alignment with the priorities and vision that we share in the unity of our Pastoral Vision. These are supported by our Capital Campaign, all achieved in a Culture of Encounter for a Church that strives to listen more and from that listening discern God’s will for us and our mission. I commend you for the goals you have achieved, especially those serving the needs of the most vulnerable among us.
I commit my continued support for each dean and each pastor as you lead this new phase of our Pastoral Vision. I also offer you the ongoing support of the Pastoral Ministry Center in this process. I hope that each person in the Archdiocese will embrace this revised vision as a way of being in our local Church. I invite all communities of faith: families, Catholic schools, universities, associations, and communities of consecrated women and men to join us as we, compelled by the Holy
Spirit, live as a Synodal Church.
Therefore, IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD’S HOLY PEOPLE, I, Gustavo García-Siller, a Missionary of the Holy Spirit, the sixth Archbishop of this local Church, on the occasion of the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, hereby renew these strategies so that we may live out our Mutually Shared Vision for Missionary Discipleship in a Culture of Synodal Encounter in our beloved Archdiocese of San Antonio.

Proclamación de la Visión Pastoral de la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio
A todo el pueblo fiel de Cristo, a los sacerdotes, a los diáconos, a las mujeres consagradas, a los religiosos y a los fieles laicos de la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio:
EL 18º DÍA DEL MES DE MAYO DEL AÑO 2013, estando reunidos en la Catedral de San Fernando para celebrar la Solemnidad de Pentecostés, proclamé en presencia de ustedes una Visión Pastoral para la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio:
- ENCONTRARSE CON CRISTO
- UNIDOS COMO IGLESIA
- ENVIADOS POR EL ESPÍRITU
Esta visión celebra quiénes somos y nos hace la misma pregunta planteada a Pedro en Jerusalén en el primer Pentecostés: “¿Qué tenemos que hacer?” (Hch 2,37). Al ser llamados al discipulado a través del encuentro con Cristo, no podemos ser pasivos. Iluminados por los principios rectores y el espíritu de la Exhortación Apostólica Evangelii Gaudium, reconocemos que nuestro seguimiento del Señor nos llama, como discípulos y misioneros, a construir una cultura hospitalaria del encuentro, así como también a vivir como una Iglesia sinodal de acuerdo a la convocatoria recientemente hecha por el Papa Francisco:
Buscando vivir en comunión sacramental unos con otros, la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio existe para hacer discípulos y misioneros de Jesucristo con el fin de prepararnos para la promesa de la vida eterna.
Viviendo profundamente nuestros valores fundamentales de:
Oración
Conformamos nuestras vidas a Cristo a través de la meditación fiel sobre la voluntad y la presencia amorosa de Dios, mientras cumplimos con las responsabilidades del discipulado.
Corresponsabilidad
Estando siempre agradecidos por los recursos que se nos confían, los utilizamos prudentemente, siendo transparentes y responsables ante Dios y ante los demás.
Unidad
Cimentados en la Eucaristía, acogemos la diversidad de las personas, las culturas y los apostolados, y fomentamos los lazos de caridad que reflejan la relación trinitaria de Dios, creando una cultura del encuentro que conduce a la comunión.
CONTINUAMOS SIENDO GUIADOS POR EL ESPÍRITU SANTO, a quien cada uno de nosotros se consagró y a quien juntos consagramos nuestra Arquidiócesis de San Antonio. Seguimos experimentando un gran crecimiento pastoral. Al considerar nuestro progreso compartido, estoy agradecido por ustedes y me enorgullecen. A través de nuestra experiencia del V Encuentro y del celo por ser modelo de una Iglesia que escucha, el Espíritu Santo sigue confirmando este rumbo, enviándonos a compartir los frutos que nos han sido dados. También me han alentado ustedes a continuar concentrándome en nuestras prioridades ya proclamadas:

La nueva evangelización
¡A través de nuestros encuentros con Cristo, que compartimos entre nosotros, proclamando la Buena Nueva con alegría, celo apostólico y ánimo renovado!
Catequesis y formación
¡Creciendo en la fe y en el conocimiento de Jesucristo a través de nuestro encuentro compartido!
Jóvenes y jóvenes adultos
¡Como discípulos misioneros, fortalecidos por nuestros encuentros con Jesucristo, que compartimos entre nosotros!
También los escuché expresar las preocupaciones y los sueños particulares de sus parroquias, escuelas y familias. Ustedes desearon ver esta visión cobrar vida de maneras específicas en sus propias parroquias. Creo que nuestra unidad de visión y de propósito se expresará más efectiva y enérgicamente en el contexto de las características y las necesidades peculiares de cada comunidad parroquial.
EN ESTA SOLEMNIDAD DE LA ANUNCIACIÓN DEL SEÑOR, invito a cada parroquia a asumir este llamado a convertirnos en una Iglesia sinodal y continúe trabajando en sus objetivos parroquiales previamente identificados. Cuando estos se cumplan, los animo a discernir otros nuevos que también estén alineados con las prioridades y la visión que compartimos en la unidad de nuestra Visión Pastoral. Estos son apoyados por nuestra campaña de capital y todo se consigue en una cultura del encuentro por una Iglesia sinodal que se esfuerza por escuchar mejor y de esa escucha, discernir la voluntad de Dios y nuestra misión. Los felicito por los objetivos que han alcanzado, especialmente aquellos que atienden las necesidades de los más vulnerables de entre nosotros.
Ofrezco mi apoyo continuo a cada decano y a cada párroco al dirigir esta nueva fase de nuestra Visión Pastoral. También les ofrezco el apoyo continuo del Centro de Ministerio Pastoral en este proceso. Espero que cada persona en la Arquidiócesis haga suya esta visión renovada y la acoja como una manera de ser en nuestra Iglesia local. Invito a todas las comunidades de fe: familias, escuelas católicas, universidades, asociaciones, y comunidades de mujeres y hombres consagrados, a unirse a nosotros, impulsados por el Espíritu Santo, viviendo como Iglesia sinodal.
Por lo tanto, EN PRESENCIA DEL PUEBLO SANTO DE DIOS, yo, Gustavo García-Siller, Misionero del Espíritu Santo, sexto Arzobispo de esta Iglesia local, en ocasión de la Solemnidad de la Anunciación del Señor, por la presente renuevo estas estrategias para que podamos vivir nuestra visión compartida para el discipulado misionero en una cultura de encuentro sinodal en nuestra querida Arquidiócesis de San Antonio.
