A path to self-sufficiency in the U.S.

The mission of Catholic Charities is to provide services to people, families, and communities in need. When efforts make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve, we know we have achieved our goal. For individuals that are in search of a new future, Caritas Legal Services is here to help. Caritas Legal Services provides comprehensive, low-cost legal aid in probate and immigration law to individuals and families seeking a secure future.

On Dec. 12, 2023, Jose and Yanilet arrived in this country. They were seeking new opportunities and a better future for their family. However, they encountered significant challenges without the support of others. They had nowhere to go until they met Leticia Reyes, a caseworker at Centro De Bienvenida. Reyes oriented them and assisted them in finding a place to stay. Jose and his family stayed in our shelter.

Jose and Yanilet were referred to Caritas Legal Services to apply for Employment Authorization. On January 24, they visited our office for their first consultation. In the beginning, the couple had many concerns, but we walked them through the process step-by-step and assisted them with our programs and services.

On June 10, Jose and Yanilet received their employment authorization cards. They were visibly happy. Staff still recalls the look in their eyes. It was clear that they were grateful. Now, Jose and Yanilet can work and build a better future for their daughter and continue reaching new dreams and goals.

This is precisely the principal objective. We assist families and communities in need by providing the support and tools they require to continue building a better future for their families. Stories such as this one exemplify the organization’s true purpose, strengthen us, and make us better human beings.
