Dear brothers and sisters,
Today, on this day of deep sadness and reflection, I speak to you, the San Antonio community, to remember the 53 migrants whose lives were tragically taken on June 27, 2022, in our beloved San Antonio. As archbishop of this community, I address you with a sorrowful heart filled with compassion as we honor those who desperately sought a better future but met their end in tragic circumstances.
Each one of the migrants who lost their lives in that trailer was a son or daughter of God, full of dignity and hope. They were human beings with names, faces and dreams, whose fate was tragically sealed on a journey marked by danger and suffering. Their loss represents a deep wound in our community and reminds us of the urgency to confront the root causes of migration and to respond with compassion and solidarity.
At times like this, it is crucial that we come together as a community and as human beings to find solutions and work together to protect the rights and dignity of all migrants. Migration is a phenomenon that affects vulnerable people seeking safety and opportunity, and it is our responsibility as a society to respond to their suffering with love, compassion and understanding.
As a Catholic, human being, and archbishop, I urge governments, humanitarian organizations, and each of you to always remember the humanity of those who are forced to leave their homes in search of a better life. It is critical that safe and legal pathways for migration are established, and that the roots of the inequality, violence and lack of opportunity that they lead people to risk their lives on dangerous journeys.
On this anniversary, in which the migrants who lost their lives in this tragedy, pray for them and their loved ones. May Mary, our mother, mother of all migrants, guide you and offer you comfort in the midst of your pain. As a community of faith, let us raise our voices, and call for justice and solidarity, so that tragedies like this never happen again.
In this way, too, I call on all the faithful and our community in general to open their hearts and arms to those who seek refuge and protection. May the mercy and love of God guide us in our ways of treating our brother and sister migrants; and inspire us to build a world where justice, peace and dignity for all, prevail.
We commend the deceased migrants to God, and ask comfort and strength for their loved ones. May his memory prompt us to act with compassion and generosity at all times.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
En este día de profunda tristeza y reflexión, me dirijo a ustedes, comunidad de San Antonio, para recordar a los 53 migrantes cuyas vidas fueron trágicamente arrebatadas el 27 de junio de 2022 en nuestro amado San Antonio. Como Arzobispo de esta comunidad, me dirijo a ustedes con el corazón afligido y lleno de conmiseración, mientras honramos a aquellos que buscaron desesperadamente un futuro mejor, pero que encontraron su final en circunstancias terribles.
Cada uno de los migrantes que perdieron la vida en ese tráiler era un hijo o hija de Dios, lleno de dignidad y esperanza. Eran seres humanos con nombres, rostros y sueños, cuyo destino quedó dramáticamente sellado en un viaje marcado por el peligro y el sufrimiento. Su pérdida representa una herida profunda en nuestra comunidad y nos recuerda la urgencia de enfrentar las causas profundas de la migración, y de responder con compasión y solidaridad.
En momentos como este, es crucial que nos unamos como comunidad y como seres humanos para buscar soluciones y trabajar juntos en la protección de los derechos y la dignidad de todos los migrantes. La migración es un fenómeno que afecta a personas vulnerables que buscan seguridad y oportunidades, y es nuestra responsabilidad como sociedad responder a su sufrimiento con amor, piedad y comprensión.
Como católico, ser humano y arzobispo, insto a los gobiernos, a las organizaciones humanitarias y a cada uno de ustedes a recordar siempre la humanidad de aquellos que se ven obligados a dejar sus hogares en busca de una vida más digna. Es fundamental que se establezcan vías seguras y legales para la migración, y que se aborde la raíz de la desigualdad, la violencia y la falta de oportunidades que empujan a las personas a arriesgar sus vidas en trayectos peligrosos.
En este aniversario, recordemos a los migrantes que perdieron la vida en este desastre, y oremos por ellos y sus seres queridos. Que María, nuestra madre, madre de todas y todos los migrantes, les guíe y les brinde consuelo en medio de su dolor. Como comunidad de fe, elevemos nuestras voces y unámonos en un llamado a la justicia y a la solidaridad, para que tragedias como esta nunca vuelvan a repetirse.
De esta manera también hago un llamado a todos los fieles y a nuestra comunidad en general, a abrir nuestros corazones y brazos a aquellos que buscan refugio y protección. Que la misericordia y el amor de Dios nos guíen en nuestro trato con los migrantes, y nos inspiren a construir un mundo donde prevalezca la justicia, la paz y la dignidad para todas y todos.
Encomendamos a Dios a los migrantes fallecidos, y pedimos su consuelo y fortaleza para sus seres queridos. Que su memoria nos impulse a actuar con compasión y generosidad en todo momento.
