Project Cool 2024

Are you or someone you know a senior who is at risk of heat-related injuries or death due to the summer heat? Catholic Charities recognizes that the intense summer temperatures can be dangerous for seniors in our community, potentially putting their lives in jeopardy. Project Cool, now in its 28th year, is a joint effort by Catholic Charities of San Antonio, Inc., San Antonio Department of Human Services, San Antonio Fire Department, United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and various other community and corporate partners.

The aim is to distribute 5,000 fans to seniors to prevent heat-related illnesses and fatalities during the sweltering summer months. The initiative offers heat relief to senior residents aged 55 and above across the city through donations and the free distribution of 20-inch box fans to those in need. These fans will provide much-needed relief from the heat and help reduce utility expenses for seniors this summer. We are proud to collaborate with partners citywide to offer free box fans to seniors, easing financial burdens for those on fixed incomes while enabling them to maintain their independence and quality of life. If you are a San Antonio resident aged 55 or older in critical need of a fan, you may qualify to receive one at no cost by calling 2-1-1 (United Way Helpline) and selecting option “1” to locate a nearby pickup location.

Since the annual Project Cool Kickoff on June 7, we have already distributed more than 1,000 box fans to seniors aged 55 and above in the community. With temperatures in San Antonio reaching as high as 103 degrees, the demand for fans has never been greater, and we require urgent assistance. Each box fan costs $27, and your monetary contribution or donation of a fan could make a significant difference in the life of a senior in need within our community.

To donate a fan:

  • Make an online monetary donation by following the donation link below to help us acquire box fans; or
  • Drop off fans at designated locations, including Catholic Charities, Guadalupe Community Center, St. Stephen’s CARE Center, or any San Antonio Fire Station except the one at the San Antonio International Airport.
