About

Hope for the Future is an agency of the Archdiocese of San Antonio which was formed in 2006. Since its inception, Hope has provided more than $25 million in tuition assistance support to tens of thousands of children and families in every Catholic School in the Archdiocese.

Mission

Hope for the Future provides tuition assistance to financially disadvantaged families so their children can obtain the academic and spiritual benefits of a Catholic school education in the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

Why We Exist

We believe a quality education transforms lives! Catholic schools provide students with an excellent academic and faith-based education that strengthens the very fabric of our broader community.

For over 170 years, Catholic schools have opened doorways for children and families in the Archdiocese of San Antonio —doorways out of poverty and into prosperity, out of despair toward hope. However, the expense of tuition restricts access and excludes many families from attending Catholic schools, where their children could be developed into the person God created them to be.

Research over the past 20 years shows that the educational benefits of Catholic schools are greatest for the poorest, most disadvantaged students. Catholic students from at-risk backgrounds are 42% more likely to graduate high school than their public-school peers, in fact, 98% of high school seniors who receive a Hope award graduate from high school and go on to volunteer, give to charity, and go to church than their public-school peers.

Hope for the Future exists to provide the tuition assistance support that families need to ensure these benefits for their children, and for generations yet to come!

Nature of the Problem

Over the years, the gap between the cost of Catholic school tuition and the ability of families to afford those costs is getting larger and larger. This is due in part to the fact that in early years, religious orders ran the schools with very little cost for teacher salaries. Between the costs of inflation, and the cost of hiring lay persons as teachers and administrators, a Catholic school education for many is simply out of reach.

As a result, some of our schools have lost significant enrollment which was exacerbated with the COVID pandemic. In fact, in the past 15 years, 10 of our Catholic schools have closed as a result. Catholic schools and the families they serve need and deserve the support of the entire community now more than ever!

Development Board

The Hope for the Future Development Board is a partnership between the Archdiocese of San Antonio and concerned business and community leaders to develop the financial resources necessary to open doors to provide access to Catholic education for all children. The Development Board accomplishes this monumental task by raising funds to provide tuition assistance for eligible families.

Supporting Catholic School Families

Who We Serve

Hope for the Future serves any financially disadvantaged family who wishes to provide a faith-filled and rigorous education to their children at one of the 35 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, Hope for the Future provided over $2 million in tuition assistance to 1,653 K-12 students across our Archdiocese.  Over the past five years, our tuition assistance program has supported 20% of ALL students enrolled in our Catholic schools.

Hope for the Future offers a brighter future for families who despite great sacrifice, need some help to afford Catholic school tuition.  Nearly half of our families who receive tuition assistance support qualify for federal free and reduced lunch programs, and yet they spend as much as 20% of their gross income to give their child the opportunity to attend a Catholic school.

This past year in Uvalde after the tragedy at Robb Elementary, Hope received significant support for new students coming to Sacred Heart Catholic School. When tuition was no obstacle, enrollment at the school doubled.  Families effected by the tragedy will be forever grateful that tuition support allowed their child to receive the comfort and support of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Our goal is to be a gateway of hope for the next generation regardless of economic status!

Tuition Assistance Program

Catholic education changes lives. However, the expense of tuition excludes some families from attending Catholic schools. Hope for the Future’s Tuition Assistance Program offers need-based assistance to families seeking a Catholic education for their children.

Recipient quote:

“Thank you so much for the monies we received from Hope for the Future. It’s such a blessing. Even with three family members willing to contribute to the cost of education, it was too much of a stretch on our budgets. We were just about to give up then we heard about Hope for the Future. We applied late and were anxious to hear back. We were so delighted when the answer was yes! Without Hope for the Future our daughter would not be attending her Catholic school. We are so appreciative of the people and businesses that donate to this wonderful organization. With their help, our younger generation has a brighter future.“

Thank you for blessing our family,

The Linares Family

Our Tuition Assistance Program is designed for families and students currently enrolled or applying for the next school year in any Catholic school, grades K-12, in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. A family must apply each year through FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment to qualify for a grant—all awards are made based on financial need.
